Sovereign state What does it mean

A sovereign state means an independent country that has full control over its own territory, government, and affairs, without being subject to another power.

In simple terms, for a place to be considered a sovereign state, it usually has these features:

1. Defined Territory – clear borders that mark where it begins and ends.

2. Permanent Population – people who live there on a continuing basis.

3. Government – an organized authority that makes and enforces laws.

4. Sovereignty – full control over its internal and external affairs (not ruled by another country).

5. Recognition – other states acknowledge it as independent (important in international law).

For example, Spain, Mexico, and Japan are sovereign states. In contrast, Puerto Rico or Scotland are not fully sovereign states, because they are under the authority of the United States and the United Kingdom, respectively.
