What Is La Batalla de Flores de Laredo?

La Batalla de Flores de Laredo (the "Battle of the Flowers") is one of the most spectacular and historic festivals in Cantabria, northern Spain. Held every year on the last Friday of August in the coastal town of Laredo, the event features a parade of enormous floats completely covered — every single centimeter — in fresh natural flowers such as dahlias, daisies, and marigolds. It has been officially recognized as a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest since 1965, making it one of Spain's most prestigious floral celebrations, alongside events like the Battle of Flowers in Valencia's Fallas.

In 2026, Laredo celebrates the 115th edition of the Batalla de Flores, taking place on Friday, 28 August 2026, as part of the town's "Semana Grande" (Big Week) festivities running from 24 to 30 August.

The History and Origin of the Batalla de Flores

The tradition began by the sea. On 30 August 1908, the fishing boats ("traineras") of Laredo's Fishermen's Guild returned to port and were spontaneously welcomed by townspeople throwing flowers at them. The Laredo Town Hall recognized the potential of this joyful, improvised act and decided to turn it into an annual civic celebration — and so the Batalla de Flores was born.

During the 1910s and 1920s, the festival quickly grew in scale and artistry. Floats became larger and more elaborate, participants began parading in costume, and the allegorical scenes on the carts started depicting historical, fantastical, and folkloric themes. Word spread across Cantabria and neighboring provinces, drawing growing crowds each year. Today, more than a century later, the festival is living through its golden age, with float-builders ("carrocistas") pushing the limits of size, complexity, and floral craftsmanship every edition.

Why Is It Celebrated? The Main Reason Behind the Festival

At its core, the Batalla de Flores is a celebration of community identity, craftsmanship, and gratitude — originally an expression of welcome to local fishermen, it evolved into a way for the town to showcase collective creativity and mark the symbolic close of the summer tourist season. The main reasons the festival endures are:

  • Honoring local tradition — commemorating the original 1908 welcome of the fishing fleet.
  • Artistic competition — neighborhood associations ("peñas") and float-builders spend up to ten months designing and building their floats for a single day of glory, competing for the best allegorical creation of the year.
  • Community bonding — families, friends, and neighbors of all ages gather in the workshops the night before ("Noche Mágica" or "Noche de la Flor") to hand-nail hundreds of thousands of flowers onto each float in a race against time.
  • Closing the summer season — the festival marks a festive farewell to summer along the Cantabrian coast.

How the Floats Are Made

Each float is built on a metal, wood, and cork frame, requiring months of preparation. Flowers are grown in fields surrounding Laredo specifically for the event. On the eve of the parade — known locally as the "Noche Mágica" (Magic Night) — fresh flowers are cut in the fields that same afternoon and nailed one by one onto the structures using traditional techniques, so they stay perfectly fresh for the parade the next day. A single float can require between 150,000 and 180,000 fresh flowers, and around 14 floats typically compete each year, representing roughly a million and a half flowers in total across the whole event.

What Happens on the Day of the Festival

The parade sets off at around 5:30 in the afternoon and winds through the streets of Laredo, culminating around the Alameda de Miramar, where thousands of spectators gather. Alongside the main float parade, the day includes:

  • Street markets and stalls throughout the town
  • Live music and performances
  • A jury evaluation to select the best float of the year
  • A fireworks display at nightfall, closing the celebration

Combine Beach and Festival: A Perfect One-Day Visit to Laredo

Laredo is famous for two things that pair perfectly in a single day trip: its stunning Playa de Salvé, one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in Cantabria, and the Batalla de Flores itself. If you're visiting on Friday, 28 August, here's a sample plan to make the most of both:

  1. Morning (9:00 AM – 1:30 PM): Relax and swim at Playa de Salvé, Laredo's main beach, known for its fine golden sand and gentle waters.
  2. Midday (1:30 PM – 4:00 PM): Have lunch in the old town, try local Cantabrian dishes and fresh seafood, and stroll through Laredo's historic quarter (Puebla Vieja).
  3. Afternoon (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM): Head to the Alameda de Miramar early to secure a good viewing spot for the parade before it gets crowded.
  4. Evening (5:30 PM – 8:00 PM): Watch the Batalla de Flores parade of floats.
  5. Night (8:00 PM onward): Enjoy street markets, live concerts, and the closing fireworks display.

History, Meaning & Complete Celebration Guide

What Is Raksha Bandhan?

Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, Rakhi Purnima, or by regional names like Saluno and Silono, is one of the most cherished Hindu festivals, celebrated primarily across India, Nepal, and among Hindu communities worldwide. The name itself comes from Sanskrit — raksha meaning "protection" and bandhan meaning "bond" or "tie." At its heart, the festival honors and strengthens the bond between brothers and sisters, symbolized through the tying of a sacred thread called a "rakhi."

Raksha Bandhan always falls on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu lunar month of Shravana, which typically lands in August. In 2026, Raksha Bandhan falls on Friday, 28 August, with the traditionally auspicious morning window for tying the rakhi running from approximately 5:57 AM to 9:48 AM IST, as the inauspicious "Bhadra" period ends before sunrise that day — making 2026 considered a particularly favorable year to perform the ritual.

The History and Origin of Raksha Bandhan

The roots of Raksha Bandhan reach deep into Indian mythology and history, with several legends explaining its origin:

  • Indra and Indrani: One of the oldest references describes Indrani (Sachi), wife of the god Indra, tying a protective thread on his wrist before a battle against demons, believed to have granted him strength and protection.
  • Krishna and Draupadi: A popular legend from the Mahabharata tells of Draupadi tying a piece of cloth torn from her sari around Lord Krishna's wrist to stop his bleeding, after which Krishna vowed to protect her — a bond he honored years later during her moment of crisis in the royal court.
  • Historical accounts: Some historical narratives describe queens sending rakhi threads to rulers of other kingdoms as a symbolic request for protection and alliance, blending the festival's meaning with diplomacy and trust between communities, not just blood relatives.

Over centuries, these stories merged into the modern tradition celebrated today: a day when sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers' wrists as a symbol of love and protection, and brothers, in turn, promise to protect and support their sisters throughout life.

Why Is Raksha Bandhan Celebrated? The Main Reason

The central purpose of Raksha Bandhan is to celebrate and reaffirm the sibling bond — but its meaning runs deeper than a single relationship type:

  • Protection and duty — brothers pledge to protect and support their sisters, while sisters pray for their brothers' wellbeing and long life.
  • Unconditional love — the festival is a yearly reminder of the emotional closeness siblings share, especially as families grow apart geographically.
  • Extended bonds — the ritual isn't limited to biological siblings; cousins, close friends, and even non-family protectors can be tied a rakhi, symbolizing chosen bonds of trust and care.
  • Renewal of family ties — for many families, it's one of the few occasions each year that reliably brings siblings together, whether in person or virtually.

How Raksha Bandhan Is Celebrated

While customs vary by region and family, the core ritual generally includes the following steps:

  1. The sister performs a small aarti (ritual with a lit lamp) for her brother.
  2. She applies a tilak (a mark of turmeric, sandalwood, or kumkum) on his forehead.
  3. She ties the rakhi thread around his wrist while offering prayers for his wellbeing.
  4. The brother offers sweets to his sister and, in turn, promises his lifelong protection and support.
  5. Gifts are exchanged — traditionally money or jewelry from the brother, alongside heartfelt gifts from the sister.
  6. Families often gather for a festive meal, and many households prepare traditional sweets like ladoos or barfis for the occasion.

In modern times, with families often separated by distance, rakhis are commonly sent by post or courier, and video calls have become a common way for siblings abroad to still take part in the ceremony together.

Regional Variations

Raksha Bandhan is known and celebrated slightly differently across India:

  • Western India (Maharashtra, Gujarat): Coincides with Narali Purnima, when coastal communities also offer coconuts to the sea.
  • Northern India: Rakhi is traditionally tied in the morning, alongside family gatherings and festive meals.
  • Eastern India: Known in parts of Bihar and Jharkhand as Saluno or Silono, sometimes combined with local agricultural rituals.
  • Nepal: Celebrated as Janai Purnima or Rakshya Bandhan, with additional Hindu religious observances.

Practical Information — Raksha Bandhan 2026

  • Date: Friday, 28 August 2026
  • Occurs on: Purnima (full moon) of the Shravana month
  • Auspicious morning window (2026): approx. 5:57 AM – 9:48 AM IST (Bhadra ends before sunrise this year)
  • Significance: Celebrates the bond, love, and mutual protection between brothers and sisters
  • Observed by: Hindus in India, Nepal, and diaspora communities worldwide
  • Also known as: Rakhi, Rakhi Purnima, Saluno, Silono

More than just a ritual with a colorful thread, Raksha Bandhan endures because it captures something universal — the enduring promise siblings make to look out for one another. Whether celebrated with a simple rakhi tied at home or a joyful family gathering, the festival remains one of India's warmest expressions of love, trust, and lifelong loyalty.

Sort Photos & Videos by Capture Date and Time for Editing

How to Sort Hundreds of Photos and Videos by Capture Date for Shotcut Editing

If you've ever come back from a trip with a phone full of photos and a drone full of clips, you know the problem: everything is mixed together, file names don't match the order things happened, and Windows "Date modified" is often wrong. This guide walks through a real example — sorting hundreds of files from a folder called Alicante julio 2026 — into a clean, chronological set ready to drop into Shotcut. You'll see two ways to do it: a safe copy into a new folder, and a rename in place that uses no extra disk space.

Why "Date Modified" Isn't Enough

Windows Explorer's "Date modified" timestamp reflects when the file was last written to disk, not necessarily when the photo or video was actually captured. This becomes a real problem when you're combining footage from different devices — for example, DJI drone videos and smartphone photos — because copying, syncing, or transferring files can change that timestamp. The result is a sort order that looks chronological but isn't. For a trip video where the sequence of events matters, this small discrepancy can throw off the whole story.

The more reliable approach is to read the actual capture date/time embedded in the file's metadata (EXIF data for photos, creation metadata for videos) rather than relying on the file system's modified date.

Which Option Should You Choose?

Both options use the same naming pattern and the same file types. The difference is what happens to your original files and how much disk space you need.

  • Option A – Copy to a new SORTED folder: the safest choice, because your originals are never touched. The trade-off is that every photo and video is duplicated, so you need as much free space as the whole folder takes. With large drone and 4K clips, that can be many gigabytes.
  • Option B – Rename in place: no new folder and no duplicates, so it takes no extra disk space. The trade-off is that the original file names are replaced, so the script saves a log file that lets you trace every old name.

If you have limited disk space or very large video files, Option B is the better fit.

Option A: Copy Into a New SORTED Folder

This PowerShell script copies your files into a new folder, renamed and sorted by timestamp. It never touches your original files — it only creates copies.

Here's what the script does:

  • 📷 Includes JPG, JPEG, PNG, and HEIC photos
  • 🎥 Includes MP4, MOV, AVI, M4V, MTS, and M2TS videos
  • 🕐 Sorts everything by timestamp
  • 🔢 Renames copies sequentially, e.g. 0001_20260710_101523.jpg
  • 📁 Places all copies in a new SORTED subfolder
  • ✅ Leaves your original files completely untouched
  • ⚠️ Uses extra disk space equal to the size of all copied files

Step 1: Open PowerShell

Press the Windows key, type PowerShell, and open Windows PowerShell.

Step 2: Copy and paste this command

Enter your folder address. This is an example: C:\Users\Videos\Alicante julio 2026
$src="C:\Users\Videos\Alicante julio 2026"; $dst="$src\SORTED"; New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force -Path $dst | Out-Null; Get-ChildItem $src -File | Where-Object {$_.Extension -match '\.(jpg|jpeg|png|heic|mp4|mov|avi|m4v|mts|m2ts)$'} | Sort-Object LastWriteTime | ForEach-Object -Begin {$i=1} -Process {$ext=$_.Extension.ToLower(); $name="{0:D4}_{1:yyyyMMdd_HHmmss}{2}" -f $i,$_.LastWriteTime,$ext; Copy-Item $_.FullName (Join-Path $dst $name); $i++}

Step 3: Check the result

The script creates a new folder:

C:\Users\Videos\Alicante julio 2026\SORTED

Inside, you'll find your photos and videos copied and renamed in order, like this:

0001_20260710_101523.jpg
0002_20260710_101601.mp4
0003_20260710_101745.jpg
0004_20260710_102012.mp4

Once you've confirmed everything is correct in SORTED folder, then you can use it. At last you can decided to delete either the SORTED folder or your originals to free up the duplicated space — but only after checking the result.

Option B: Rename in Place (No Extra Disk Space)

If you don't want duplicates, rename the files directly in the same folder. Renaming only changes the name written in the file system — the photo or video data is not copied or moved — so it uses no additional space, and each file keeps its original "Date modified" value.

A simple one-pass rename can fail when a new name already exists in the folder (for example after a previous partial run, or if the script stopped halfway). To avoid this, this version renames in two passes: first every file gets a unique temporary name, then each file gets its final name. Name clashes become impossible.

Here's what this version does:

  • 📷🎥 Handles the same photo and video formats as Option A
  • 🕐 Sorts everything by timestamp (and by name when two files have the same timestamp), then renames in that order
  • 🔢 Uses the same naming pattern, e.g. 0001_20260710_101523.jpg
  • 🔁 Renames in two passes (temporary names first), so it never fails because of duplicate names
  • 💾 Creates no new folder and no copies, so there is no extra disk usage
  • 🧾 Saves a log file (rename_log_DATE_TIME.csv) with every old and new name, written before any file is renamed
  • 🧪 Offers a preview mode that shows the old and new names in a table without changing anything

Step 1: Preview first (recommended)

Open PowerShell and run this preview. It only prints a table of old and new names and changes nothing. If PowerShell warns you about pasting multiple lines, choose Paste anyway — that's a normal Windows prompt.

$src = "C:\Users\Videos\Alicante julio 2026"
$files = @(Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath $src -File |
  Where-Object { $_.Extension -match '^\.(jpg|jpeg|png|heic|mp4|mov|avi|m4v|mts|m2ts)$' } |
  Sort-Object LastWriteTime, Name)
$i = 1
$map = foreach ($f in $files) {
  [pscustomobject]@{
    Path = $f.FullName
    Old  = $f.Name
    Tmp  = "tmp_" + [guid]::NewGuid().ToString("N") + $f.Extension.ToLower()
    New  = "{0:D4}_{1:yyyyMMdd_HHmmss}{2}" -f $i, $f.LastWriteTime, $f.Extension.ToLower()
  }
  $i++
}
$map | Select-Object Old, New | Format-Table -AutoSize

Step 2: Run the real rename

If the new names look right, run this version. It saves the log first, then renames every file to a temporary name, then to its final name.

$src = "C:\Users\Videos\Alicante julio 2026"
$files = @(Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath $src -File |
  Where-Object { $_.Extension -match '^\.(jpg|jpeg|png|heic|mp4|mov|avi|m4v|mts|m2ts)$' } |
  Sort-Object LastWriteTime, Name)
$i = 1
$map = foreach ($f in $files) {
  [pscustomobject]@{
    Path = $f.FullName
    Old  = $f.Name
    Tmp  = "tmp_" + [guid]::NewGuid().ToString("N") + $f.Extension.ToLower()
    New  = "{0:D4}_{1:yyyyMMdd_HHmmss}{2}" -f $i, $f.LastWriteTime, $f.Extension.ToLower()
  }
  $i++
}
$stamp = Get-Date -Format yyyyMMdd_HHmmss
$map | Select-Object Old, New | Export-Csv "$src\rename_log_$stamp.csv" -NoTypeInformation -Encoding UTF8
foreach ($m in $map) { Rename-Item -LiteralPath $m.Path -NewName $m.Tmp }
foreach ($m in $map) { Rename-Item -LiteralPath (Join-Path $src $m.Tmp) -NewName $m.New }

Step 3: Check the result

Open the folder in Explorer. Your photos and videos are still in the same place, now numbered in chronological order:

0001_20260710_101523.jpg
0002_20260710_101601.mp4
0003_20260710_101745.jpg
0004_20260710_102012.mp4
rename_log_20261025_183012.csv

Important notes for Option B

  • Safe to repeat, but keep the first log. Because of the two-pass method, running it again no longer causes duplicate-name errors. Each run creates a new log file, and only the first log contains your true original names, so don't delete it.
  • If the script stops halfway, some files may be left with a tmp_ name. Just run the script again: those files are included and get their final names. The log from the first run still has the original names.
  • Renaming cannot be undone automatically. Keep the first rename_log_...csv if you may need the original names later.
  • Files with the same timestamp (for example, burst photos) are ordered by their file name, so the result is always consistent.
  • Already ran Option A by mistake? Check that your originals are still in the main folder, delete the SORTED folder, and empty the Recycle Bin if you deleted it from Explorer — the space isn't freed until then. Then use Option B.
  • Not sure? Back up the folder to an external drive first, or use Option A.

Generate the Command for Your Own Folder

Paste your folder path below, choose the option you want, and the tool builds the PowerShell command for you.

Paste a folder path above to generate the command...

A More Accurate Option: Reading Real Capture Metadata

The scripts above sort by file timestamp, which works well for most single-device situations. But if your files came from multiple sources — a DJI drone, a phone, maybe a separate camera — and you need the exact capture time down to the second, a more advanced version reads the embedded metadata directly instead of relying on the file system. This is the recommended approach when timestamps must be perfectly accurate across mixed devices.

Getting the Sorted Files Into Shotcut

Once your files are sorted (in the SORTED folder for Option A, or in the original folder for Option B), the next question is how to bring hundreds of ordered files into Shotcut without losing that order. A few notes on this:

  • Shotcut's Open File button (top-left) is designed for opening media files, but selecting hundreds of files at once through this dialog can scramble the order you worked hard to create.
  • Instead, for large batches, use View → Playlist to open the Playlist panel, then add your sorted files there. Because they're already numbered sequentially, they'll load in the correct order.
  • From the Playlist, you can then drag the files onto the Timeline in that same order, ready for editing.

Quick Recap

  1. Choose your method: Option A copies files into a new SORTED folder (safest, but needs extra disk space); Option B renames files in place (no duplicates, no extra space).
  2. For Option B, run the -WhatIf preview first, then the real rename once, and keep rename_log.csv as a record of the original names.
  3. Open Shotcut and use View → Playlist rather than Open File for large batches.
  4. Add the sorted files to the Playlist, then drag them to the Timeline in order.

With this workflow, a folder of hundreds of mixed photos and videos becomes a clean, chronological sequence ready for editing — no manual renaming, no guesswork about what happened first, and, if you choose Option B, no duplicate files eating up your disk.

Jaywan Royal Card & Etihad Guest Credit Cards Full UAE Benefits Guide (2026)

Jaywan Royal Card and Etihad Guest Credit Cards

Every UAE Travel Benefit Explained (2026)

Last updated: August 2026

UAE residents now have two very different ways to turn everyday card spending into Etihad Airways perks. The first is Jaywan Royal, the premium tier of the UAE's national card scheme, which struck a fresh partnership with Etihad Airways in October 2025. The second is the long-running family of Etihad Guest co-branded credit cards issued by UAE banks such as Emirates NBD, ADIB, Al Hilal Bank, ADCB, Emirates Islamic and FAB. This guide breaks down what each card actually offers, how the benefits differ, and which one suits your travel habits — with every figure sourced from official bank and airline pages.

What Is the Jaywan Royal Card?

Jaywan is the UAE's own domestic card scheme, developed by Al Etihad Payments, a subsidiary of the Central Bank of the UAE. It was built to give UAE residents a locally issued, locally accepted alternative to international networks, and is offered through the country's major banks in both debit and credit formats. Jaywan Royal is the scheme's top-tier product, aimed at higher-spending customers who want premium perks layered on top of standard domestic card functionality.

The Etihad Airways and Al Etihad Payments Partnership

On 23 October 2025, Etihad Airways and Al Etihad Payments signed a Memorandum of Understanding designed to link the Jaywan Royal card directly to Etihad's booking platform. According to Etihad's official press release, the deal gives Jaywan Royal debit and credit cardholders an exclusive discount on Comfort and Deluxe fares across Etihad's global network when booking through etihad.com, along with priority Business Check-in and Priority Boarding.

H.E. Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, Assistant Governor of Banking Operations and Support Services at the Central Bank of the UAE and Chairman of Al Etihad Payments, said the tie-up was designed to move Jaywan "beyond everyday transactions" and into more rewarding travel experiences for cardholders. Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves framed the agreement as part of a broader push to build more interconnected, customer-focused infrastructure across the UAE.

Jaywan Royal Benefits for Etihad Bookings

  • Fare discounts: Exclusive pricing on Comfort and Deluxe cabin fares across Etihad's entire route network, applicable when booking directly on etihad.com.
  • Priority Business Check-in: Jaywan Royal cardholders can use dedicated Business check-in counters regardless of the cabin they've booked.
  • Priority Boarding: Earlier boarding access, reducing wait times at the gate.
  • National scheme acceptance: Because Jaywan is issued by leading UAE financial institutions and accepted nationwide across all payment channels, the card works for everyday spending as well as travel booking.

Etihad Guest Co-Branded Credit Cards in the UAE

Separate from Jaywan, several UAE banks issue Visa credit cards co-branded with Etihad Guest, Etihad's frequent-flyer programme. How to Get the Most Value

  • Book Comfort or Deluxe fares directly on etihad.com with a Jaywan Royal card to capture the fare discount — third-party travel agents and OTAs are not covered by the MoU.
  • Pair a Jaywan Royal card for domestic spending with an Etihad Guest co-branded credit card if you fly Etihad frequently, since the two programmes are not mutually exclusive.
  • Track annual spend thresholds on Etihad Guest cards carefully — most welcome bonuses and discount vouchers are tied to specific 6- or 12-month spending milestones.
  • Compare minimum salary requirements before applying; most premium Etihad Guest cards require a minimum monthly income of AED 30,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jaywan Royal a credit card or a debit card?

Both. The Etihad partnership applies to Jaywan Royal debit and credit cards alike, since the benefit is tied to the card tier rather than the payment type.

Do Jaywan Royal cardholders earn Etihad Guest Miles?

The publicly announced MoU covers fare discounts and priority airport services, not mile accrual. For mile-earning, a separate Etihad Guest co-branded credit card is required.

Which UAE bank issues the best Etihad Guest credit card?

It depends on spending habits: Emirates NBD's Visa Elevate offers the largest welcome bonus, while Al Hilal Bank and FAB offer some of the highest per-dirham mileage rates. Compare annual fees and salary requirements before choosing.

Can I use both a Jaywan Royal card and an Etihad Guest credit card?

Yes. They are separate products from separate issuers, so cardholders can hold both and use each for the benefits it offers.
