Al-Ándalus

Al-Ándalus (also written Al-Andalus) was the name used by Muslims for the parts of the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) that were under Islamic rule between 711 and 1492.

It began when Muslim armies from North Africa crossed into Iberia in 711 and defeated the Visigothic kingdom. Over time, Al-Ándalus became one of the most advanced and culturally rich regions in medieval Europe.

• 711–756 – Muslim conquest and rule under the Umayyad Caliphate.
• 756–929 – Independent Emirate of Córdoba.
• 929–1031 – Caliphate of Córdoba, considered the golden age.
• 1031–1492 – Smaller Muslim kingdoms called taifas, followed by gradual Christian reconquest.
• 1492 – The fall of Alhambra in Granada marked the end of Muslim rule in Iberia.
