Cross the 18th-century Puente del Perdón beside it and you're straight onto a riverside trail toward the Cascada del Purgatorio waterfall.

Distance: ~81 km / ~70 minutes via the A-1, exit toward the M-604.

2. Puerto de Navacerrada & Peñalara Natural Park

Part of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, this high mountain pass is where madrileños go to hike granite trails in summer and ski in winter, all within an hour of the city centre — no other Spanish capital puts a national park this close.

Distance: ~60 km / ~50 minutes via the A-1 and M-102.

4. Buitrago del Lozoya

Wrapped by a bend of the River Lozoya inside the only fully intact medieval town wall left in the Community of Madrid (a Monumento Nacional since 1931), with a 15th-century castle, a Gothic-Mudéjar church, and the small Museo Picasso Buitrago — a private collection Picasso gave to his personal barber, a native of the town.
