In May 2017, I got the chance to visit the United States for the first time to attend an international conference. The conference itself was held in a city near Washington DC, so I used a one-day break to explore the nation's capital. After a smooth bus ride followed by a train journey, I reached Washington DC and set out to see some of its most iconic landmarks — starting with the tall white obelisk pictured above: the Washington Monument.

What is the Washington Monument?

The Washington Monument is a towering marble obelisk built to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States. Constructed of granite faced with Maryland marble, the structure measures roughly 55 feet square at its base and stands about 554 feet 7 inches tall, weighing an estimated 91,000 tons. It remains, to this day, the tallest predominantly stone structure and the tallest obelisk in the world.

The idea took shape in 1833, when a private organization was formed to fund and build a monument befitting the nation's first president. A design competition eventually favored architect Robert Mills' concept of a grand obelisk. Construction began in 1848, and the cornerstone was laid on July 4 of that year before a crowd of roughly 20,000 people, including President James K. Polk and former First Lady Dolley Madison.

Money troubles and the Civil War halted construction for over two decades — visitors today can still spot a subtle change in stone color roughly a third of the way up, marking where work resumed years later. The monument first opened to visitors in 1886 and reopened with a public elevator in 1888. Inside its walls are 193 carved memorial stones, donated by states, cities, and even foreign nations during the fundraising years — a kind of nineteenth-century time capsule embedded in stone.

Why Visit the Washington Monument?

Beyond its striking scale, the monument sits at the symbolic center of the National Mall, offering sweeping views of the Capitol, the White House, and the Potomac River from its observation deck. It's a tribute not just to a man, but to the founding ideals of the nation he helped build — making it one of the most meaningful stops on any Washington DC itinerary, especially for first-time visitors and history enthusiasts.

How to Reach the Washington Monument

The monument's official address is 2 15th Street NW, Washington DC, right on the National Mall. Here's how most visitors get there:

By Metro: Take the Blue, Orange, or Silver line to Smithsonian Station, exit toward the National Mall, and walk about nine minutes west — the monument is visible as soon as you're above ground. Federal Triangle and L'Enfant Plaza stations are also within walking distance.
By train: If arriving from out of town, Amtrak, MARC, and VRE trains stop at Union Station, from where you can connect via Metro or the DC Circulator bus.
By DC Circulator Bus: The National Mall Circulator route starts at Union Station and loops past the Capitol, museums, and monuments.
On foot/bike: The Mall is very walkable, and Capital Bikeshare stations are available nearby.

Tip: Admission is free, but a timed entry ticket is required. Tickets can be reserved in advance or picked up same-day (first-come, first-served) at the Washington Monument Lodge on 15th Street starting early morning. Arrive early, especially in peak season.

Lincoln Memorial — a neoclassical shrine at the western end of the Mall, inscribed with Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
Jefferson Memorial — a domed monument on the Tidal Basin, especially scenic during cherry blossom season.
National World War II Memorial — honoring the millions of Americans who served in WWII, located between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial.
Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial — a striking granite sculpture near the Tidal Basin.
Smithsonian Museums — several world-class, free museums line the Mall near Smithsonian Station.
The White House — a short walk north of the Mall, near McPherson Square station.

Final Thoughts

Visiting the Washington Monument was a memorable part of my first trip to the United States — a reminder that some of the most powerful travel experiences don't need a long itinerary, just a well-planned day trip. If you're ever in Washington DC, even for a short stopover, this is one landmark well worth the short walk across the Mall.
